Over the long weekend in June, 5 members of Venus Bay SLSC were awarded the National Medal from the Governor General of Australia. The National Medal was established by the Commonwealth of Australia in 1975 as one of the original elements of the distinctive Australian system of honours and awards. The Medal recognises long service in organisations that protect life and property at risk to their members. Simon Gee, Craig Watson, Paul Marshall, Brett Watson, and David Cumming were the recipients of this prestigious award. A letter from Surf Life Saving Australia highlighted the significance of the award stating 'Your remarkable contribution of preserving the proud safety record for all Australians along the Australian coastline, whilst engaging in a service that may put your own life at risk is now fittingly recognised'. Venus Bay SLSC is the first Life Saving club in Victoria to award these medals to members.
